Margaret, the second daughter in the Powell family, was stricken wit h cholera when five years old and given up to die, but her father blesse d her and promised that she would grow to be a useful woman in Zion. Soo n after her eighth birthday, they sailed from Liverpool and were six week s getting to Boston; they traveled by train and boat to Iowa City, then c rossed the Plains by handcart. When Brigham Young sent wagons to meet the se weary pioneers and help them into the Valley, she refused to ride, say ing, "I have walked this far and I want to walk all the way."
As soon as they were settled in their small log house (with no furnitu re), her father began to work on the temple. He worked only one day whe n he took ill and died three days later, October 9, 1856, leaving his wid ow with six small children. Margaret went out among the neighbors tendin g babied, washing dishes, cleaning, spinning, washing, ironing, and whate ver else she could to to help. She wanted to go to school, but couldn't , so she taught herself to read and write. The family moved to Payson, i n 1857, where they lived in a dugout for the first few months, until a ho me was built.
Although her first baby boy died in infancy, her marriage to James Bet ts, April 3, 1867, was happy. She helped her husband build their adobe ho use where she raised her family, and she often mentioned how dear the hom e was to her because she helped to build it. After eleven years, her husb and ahd her brother David were killed in a snowslide in Payson Canyon, le aving her with five little ones, the oldest being ten years and the young est three weeks. Struggling to raise them, she developed an aptitude fo r nursing and helped many families in Payson, Tintic and Salt Lake City . She always tried to help those in need and make life more pleasant fo r everybody, many times refusing pay.
Margaret died 23 Feb 1925 in Payson. (Picture included in articl e - very pretty woman)
